Slovakian Online Gaming
Operators offering gambling on the Internet are required to pay taxes to the state budget of 27% of the difference between accepted bets and payoffs.
Tipos, Slovakia’s state-run lottery that at one time was the largest operator in the country and so successful with its online betting operation that it closed its land-based betting business in 2008, was granted credit protection again creditors by the Bratislava 1 District Court in May 2011. Tipos has steadily been losing business to foreign-based online competition and facing a EUR 66 million judgment for lottery trademark infringement awarded by the Slovakian Supreme Court.
Tipos is still in business, but Slovakia has yet to issue an online casino license.
In 2011, the Slovakian Ministry of Finance withdrew its proposal to block online gambling sites that did not have a Slovak license for fear of violating EU law.
